Most employees in the United States are paid bi-weekly (every two weeks), resulting in 26 paychecks per year. Some employers pay weekly (52 paychecks), semi-monthly (24 paychecks, typically on the 1st and 15th), or monthly (12 paychecks).
Choose your filing status: Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Head of Household. This determines the tax brackets and standard deduction used for your federal income tax calculation. Then select your state to include state income tax in the estimate.

The United States uses a progressive federal income tax system. This means your income is taxed at increasing rates as it passes through each bracket. The 2024/2025 federal tax brackets for single filers are:
For married filing jointly, the bracket thresholds are roughly doubled. For example, the 10% bracket covers taxable income up to $23,200, and the 12% bracket extends to $94,300. Head of Household filers have brackets that fall between Single and Married Filing Jointly.
It is important to understand that only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate. If you earn $60,000 as a single filer, you do not pay 22% on the entire amount. Instead, you pay 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on the next portion up to $47,150, and 22% only on the remaining income above $47,150.
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes fund Social Security and Medicare programs. Every worker in the United States pays these taxes on their earned income.
Social Security tax is 6.2% of your gross wages, applied to earnings up to the wage base limit of $168,600 for 2024. Any income above that threshold is not subject to Social Security tax. Your employer also pays a matching 6.2%, but that does not come out of your paycheck.
Medicare tax is 1.45% on all earned income with no cap. If your earnings exceed $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly), an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies to the income above that threshold. This surtax is paid only by the employee.
For most workers, FICA taxes represent a combined 7.65% reduction from gross pay (6.2% Social Security plus 1.45% Medicare). On a $75,000 salary, that amounts to $5,737.50 per year, or roughly $220.67 per bi-weekly paycheck. These taxes are not reduced by standard deductions or pre-tax retirement contributions (except for certain Section 125 cafeteria plan deductions).
State income taxes vary dramatically across the country. Nine states levy no income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Living in one of these states means your take-home pay will be noticeably higher compared to states with steep income taxes.
On the other end of the spectrum, California has the highest marginal state income tax rate at 13.3%, though that rate applies only to income over $1 million. Other high-tax states include Hawaii (11%), New Jersey (10.75%), Oregon (9.9%), and Minnesota (9.85%). Many states use progressive brackets similar to the federal system, while others such as Colorado (4.4%), Illinois (4.95%), and Pennsylvania (3.07%) use a flat rate.
This calculator uses simplified effective rates for each state to provide a reasonable estimate. Your actual state tax liability may differ based on specific state deductions, credits, and local taxes.

By reducing your taxable income, pre-tax deductions lower your federal and state tax obligations. For example, if you earn $75,000 and contribute $10,000 to your 401(k), your federal taxable income drops to $65,000 (before the standard deduction). At the 22% marginal rate, that $10,000 contribution saves you approximately $2,200 in federal taxes alone, plus additional savings on state taxes.
Consider a single filer in Texas earning $80,000 annually, contributing $6,000 to a 401(k) and $2,000 to health insurance. Their taxable income for federal purposes would be $80,000 minus $6,000 minus $2,000 minus the $14,600 standard deduction, yielding $57,400. Federal tax on that amount would be approximately $7,616. FICA taxes would be $6,120 (Social Security on the full $80,000 at 6.2% equals $4,960, plus Medicare at 1.45% equals $1,160). With no state income tax, the total annual deductions and taxes come to approximately $21,736, leaving a net annual pay of roughly $58,264, or about $2,241 per bi-weekly paycheck.
Your effective tax rate is the total percentage of your gross income that goes to all taxes combined. It is different from your marginal tax rate, which is the rate on your last dollar of income. Most people have an effective tax rate well below their top marginal bracket.
