Reading Time Calculator

Estimate how long a piece of text takes to read or speak aloud. Paste your text or enter a word count, adjust the reading and speaking speed, and get instant results - all computed privately in your browser.

Words are counted by splitting on spaces and line breaks.
Enter a number of words directly instead of pasting text.
Average adult silent reading is about 200-250 WPM.
Typical speech delivery is about 130-150 WPM.

How reading time is calculated

Reading time is a simple ratio: take the number of words in your text and divide it by a reading speed measured in words per minute (WPM). If a page has 1,000 words and you read at 200 WPM, it will take about five minutes. This calculator counts the words in whatever you paste, then applies the reading and speaking speeds you choose to produce two separate estimates.

The default reading speed is 200 WPM, which sits at the low end of the typical adult range of roughly 200 to 250 WPM for silent reading. Skimming - scanning for key points rather than reading every word - is much faster and can exceed 400 WPM, while careful study of dense or technical material runs slower, often between 100 and 150 WPM. Speaking is slower still: most presenters deliver about 130 to 150 WPM, which is why the default speaking speed is 130 WPM. Adjust both numbers to match your audience or your own pace for a more accurate figure.

Times are shown as "X min Y sec" so you can plan precisely, and anything under a full minute is shown as "< 1 min". Because the math runs live in your browser, the estimates update the instant you change the text, the word count, or either speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is the word count divided by your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). For example, 1,000 words at 200 WPM takes 5 minutes. This calculator counts words, then divides by the WPM you set to estimate reading and speaking time.
What is the average reading speed?
The average adult reads silently at roughly 200 to 250 words per minute. Skimming can reach 400 or more WPM, while careful reading of technical material is often slower, around 100 to 150 WPM. The default of 200 WPM is a safe, widely used estimate.
What is a good speaking speed for a speech?
Most people speak at about 130 to 150 words per minute when presenting. Slower, more deliberate delivery sits near 100 to 120 WPM. The calculator defaults to 130 WPM for speaking time, which suits speeches, presentations, and voiceover scripts.
Can I enter a word count instead of pasting text?
Yes. Switch to the word count mode and type the number of words directly. This is useful when you already know your word count from a document editor and just want the reading or speaking time.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All counting and calculation happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored anywhere, so the tool is fully private and works offline after the page loads.
How do I lower the reading time of my content?
Cut filler words, shorten sentences, and remove repetition to reduce the word count, which directly lowers reading time. You can also raise the WPM setting to model a faster reader, but editing the text is the reliable way to make content quicker to read.
